Alphanso Summer Literacy Camp
The Alphanso Summer Literacy Camp is an eight‑week academic enrichment and social‑emotional learning (SEL) program designed to strengthen literacy skills, build confidence, and expand educational opportunity for students in rural Jamaican communities. Developed using primary prevention principles from the Community Health field, the program provides early, targeted support to help children overcome barriers that contribute to academic delays and long‑term inequities. The camp serves students preparing for the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) and offers a structured curriculum focused on reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary development, and prosocial skill‑building. Each child receives an initial assessment, followed by individualized SMART goals and differentiated instruction tailored to their learning needs. This approach ensures that students at varying academic levels receive the support necessary to make measurable progress.
In addition to academic instruction, the program integrates SEL components that help students develop self‑awareness, emotional regulation, communication skills, and resilience. These competencies are essential for navigating both school and daily life, especially in communities where children face heightened socioeconomic challenges. To remove financial barriers, ASF provides all scholastic materials, books, and supplies at no cost to families. Students also receive daily meals to support consistent attendance and overall well‑being. At the completion of the program, participants become eligible for need‑based academic scholarships that assist with the transition into secondary school – an expense that often prevents low‑income families from continuing their child’s education.
The Summer Literacy Camp is more than an academic program; it is a community‑strengthening initiative. ASF partners with local organizations to host outreach activities, promote family engagement, and create shared spaces where students, caregivers, and community members can learn and grow together.
By combining literacy development, SEL, and community engagement, the Alphanso Summer Literacy Camp provides a holistic, preventative approach that empowers children, supports families, and contributes to long‑term educational equity across rural Jamaica.

ASF Vision Casting: The Alphanso Family Resource Center
The Alphanso Family Resource Center is a planned community hub designed to expand the Alphanso Scholarship Foundation’s impact by providing families in rural Jamaican communities with consistent access to essential resources, educational support, and holistic wellness services. Built on ASF’s core belief that education is the most effective form of primary prevention, the Center will serve as a safe, accessible space where children, caregivers, and community members can receive the support they need to thrive.
The Family Resource Center will function as a year‑round extension of ASF’s existing programs, including the Summer Literacy Camp, academic scholarships, and emergency assistance initiatives. Its purpose is to address the interconnected challenges – economic hardship, limited educational access, food insecurity, and gaps in social‑emotional support – that often hinder student success and family stability.
Core Components of the Resource Center
Academic & Literacy Support
The Center will offer after‑school tutoring, literacy workshops, homework assistance, and PEP preparation sessions. These services will reinforce the gains made during the Summer Literacy Camp and ensure that students have continuous academic support throughout the school year.
Family Support & Case Navigation
Families will have access to one‑on‑one support for navigating school requirements, accessing community resources, and addressing urgent needs related to food, health, or employment. The Center will serve as a trusted point of contact for families seeking guidance, referrals, or crisis assistance.
Social‑Emotional Learning & Youth Development
The Center will host SEL groups, mentorship programs, and youth empowerment workshops that build resilience, communication skills, and emotional well‑being. These offerings will help students develop the prosocial skills necessary for long‑term success.
Community Outreach & Wellness Initiatives
The Center will partner with local organizations to facilitate community gardens, back‑to‑school drives, health education sessions, and parent engagement events. These initiatives will strengthen community cohesion and promote shared responsibility for child and family wellness.
Why the Family Resource Center Matters
Children in rural Jamaica often face multigenerational barriers tied to poverty, limited educational access, and a lack of consistent support systems. These challenges impact not only academic performance but also emotional health, family stability, and long‑term opportunity.
By establishing a Family Resource Center, ASF aims to create a sustainable, prevention‑focused infrastructure that supports families before crises escalate. The Center will provide a stable environment where children can learn, families can access resources without stigma, and the community can grow stronger together. The Alphanso Family Resource Center represents ASF’s commitment to expanding its reach across Jamaica and deepening its impact through year‑round, community‑driven programming. Over time, the Center will serve as a model for holistic, education‑centered prevention work in rural communities – demonstrating how early intervention, family support, and community engagement can transform outcomes for generations.
